This Certificate Program offers participants the opportunity to increase their understanding of qualitative research methods. This course will equip the participants with the skills, techniques, and knowledge necessary to undertake independent research using qualitative inquiry methods. This course also gives an insight into mixed methods study designs. Designed for busy professionals in a variety of settings, this interactive online course will focus on the debates in philosophy, methodologies, data collection and analysis, and software used in data collection and analysis.
Course Outcomes:
- Develop basic understanding of the history and development of qualitative research methodology
- Explain the major approaches of qualitative research and specific research strategies (e.g: narrative inquiry, case study, ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology)
- Explore in greater depth issues related to subjectivity, role, access, and ethics in qualitative research studies and their relationship to research design
- Explain the key techniques for data collection in qualitative research, including observation, interview, and Focus group discussions
- Describe data collection approaches
- Explain common strategies for qualitative research analysis (exp: coding and memos).
The course comprises of six modules:
Module 1: Introduction to Qualitative research
Module 2: Role of Philosophy and theory in qualitative research
Module 3: Qualitative Research Methodologies 1 (Basic and Phenomenology)
Module 4: Qualitative Research Methodologies 2 (Ethnography and Grounded theory)
Module 5: Qualitative Research Methodologies 3 (Narrative and Case study)
Module 6: Data Collection Instruments, Sampling techniques
This course is of 3 credit hours, with monthly 2 synchronous sessions of 2 hours (alternate Sunday from 9am - 11am +5 GMT), asynchronous learning on course site with 4 assignments. A multimedia-rich online component is an integral part of the course. Both synchronous and asynchronous learning tools will be utilized.
